Baste himself |
Bienvenidos padrinos (welcome sponsors) was a much heard line last week during our tour together with Frode, Öyvind and Odd Roger (I don’t mean Roger is odd
- Odd Roger is a name), who last Tuesday flew here from Norway. I could say that we after last week are now very
familiar with the voluntray organisation (NGO) Boliviafamilien and what it has
to do with Corazon Grande - and I thought it's a good time to introduce them. Frode and Öyvind are the sons of Baste Fanebust, who
was a Norwegian oil worker who dedicated his life to help the children in
Bolivia. It all started in 1981 when Baste travelled to Bolivia to find his
sponsor child (fadderbarn) and got to notice that the foster home she lived at
had lost all it’s economical support and wasn't doing good. After returning to
Norway Baste got a bunch of his own friends and family to become sponsors, and
so began the development of Boliviafamilien. When Baste died in 2005, hi left a
living legacy to his sons, the children in Bolivia. During the years Baste
had become friends with Siw (our "boss") and helped to build Corazon Grande, which got its
name after him, Casa Baste Fanebust.
Now Boliviafamilien
sponsors over 20 daycare centers and foster homes all around Bolivia, of which
most are run in co-operation with the Salvation Army in Bolivia. Every year in
October Frode, Öyvind and possibly other represents from Boliviafamilien makes a
few weeks long trip to Bolivia, to check up places they sponsor and look for new
targets. We were lucky to join them on their tour here in Cochabamba, and got
an eye-opening experience visiting different places during the week. I’ll let the pictures
tell the rest.
